What Makes Me Mad

Something that makes me mad is when I see women make fun of other women.  Why do we hurt one another?

An extreme example in my life occurred 25 years ago and it still bothers me today.  I was in middle school.  One of the girls in my class was overweight.

As I walked from the lunch line to a seat in the cafeteria, I looked outside because I heard yelling.  Out on the patio a group of students had surrounded the girl and were screaming, "Whale on the beach!  Whale on the beach!" over and over again.  She looked terrified and trapped.

It was an awful scene.  I froze.  It felt like forever for teachers to break up the taunting (probably only a few minutes, but you know how it is when something bad is happening, time seems to move slowly).

I have always wished I went outside and stood up for her.  I could have been a better friend.

BRILLIANT FRIENDS

Yesterday I heard one girl say to another girl (both 13 years old) that she could count on her for good advice.  I thought that was a huge compliment.

Their story was one friend had told the other friend that airing their problems openly on their facebook wall where everyone could see wasn't the best idea.  And the friend receiving the advice said at first she didn't like the advice, but when she thought about it, she knew her friend was right.

Friends can be wise in different areas.  Some girlfriends I go to for health and exercise tips, other girlfriends I trust to talk about relationships, etc.

Do you have examples of how your friends have helped you with good advice?

How do you know if the advice is good?  I met with someone this week who said 100 people will have a 100 different opinions (so true!) and it's hard to know who is right, but when you listen to your inner voice (aka gut), usually you know which pieces of advice you can trust.

Speaking of BRILLIANT FRIENDS, if any of of you want to be a guest blogger, then let me know!  Pick a topic and write about it.  E-mail your topic and words to:  glennasue34@yahoo.com or glenna@liveitlikeyoumeanit.com.

Google That Dream

Lots of people have dreams for their life.  How many take the first step toward their dreams?  How many don't know what the first step is?

In workshop one day, an 8th grader said she wants to be a doctor.  I asked what some of the first steps were to be a doctor.  She had never thought about "how to get there" before.  So we went to Google on the internet and typed in How to become a doctor.  Even I was amazed because a set of 12 steps popped up on the screen in addition to lots of other information.  She and I both learned a lot that day.

What dream should you type into a search engine like Google?

How to become a vet?
How to be an author?
How to be a nurse?
How to be an occupational therapist?
How to be a graphic artist?
How to   fill in the blank ?

Keep your dream alive!  Spend 5 minutes to research and think about what some of the steps might be.

What Scares Me

When I work and chat with girls in middle school, I find myself fearing for your future.

On one hand, the possibilities and dreams you have are wide-open.  There is no limit to what you can achieve.

On the other hand, any number of people or events could lead you to be off track.  The main person who will keep you on track is you.  Hopefully people around you want the best for you, but please know that is not always the case.  You are in charge of keeping your dreams alive.

I long for you to be happy now and in the future.  My hope is that you will have a dream and go for it.  Dreams come in all shapes and sizes.  In our workshop, we talked about dreams and goals being similar.  And almost every single one of you were able to write down one or more goals you have for your life.

Each good choice you make leads you closer to your dreams.  Believe you can achieve and you will.

dream.  believe.  achieve.
