JUST BECAUSE I AM

Just because I am smart
doesn't mean I am a geek,
a nerd or lame.

Just because I am fat doesn't
mean I'm lazy and can't do
anything.

Just because I am ugly in your
eyes doesn't mean that I am
in somebody else's.

Just because I go to church
doesn't mean I'm weird.
I love God! :)

Just because I have anger issues
doesn't mean that I go off all the
time or get mad at nothing.

Just because I am.

---Heather Distler

JUST BECAUSE I AM DIFFERENT

doesn't mean you judge me.
Just because I am short
doesn't mean I don't know it.
Just because I am a good
friend doesn't mean you
mess that up.
   I am honest.
Just because I am
quiet and shy doesn't mean
you have to talk crap.
   I do have feelings.
So just leave me alone.  I am
   done with you!
Just because I am from
Norwood doesn't mean I
am poor, white, trash.

JUDGEMENT

Whether we mean to or not, we constantly judge one another.  Many times we judge one another incorrectly and miss out on friendships that we might otherwise have enjoyed.

This week I'll post some powerful "Just Because I Am" poems written by NMS students.  I really like these works of art and I believe many people can relate to them.  If you would like to write your own "Just Because I Am" poem, then go for it.  If you would like to post it on this blog, then e-mail your poem to glenna@liveitlikeyoumeanit.com.

Thanks!

MAY 6

Wise Women students with Sgt. Pearson and
Officer Harley.

"Stay in school!"

Best Friends Alisha & Tia support one another.  "You don't have to like all the same things.  Don't tear one another down.  Lift one another up."
-Sgt. Pearson

Good times!  Fill out your survey during advisory Monday about the Wise Women NMS Speaker Series.  We need your input!  Also, watch for a special Wise Women gift for all 7th and 8th grade ladies....coming soon!

Remember:  new posts will be added to this blog all summer long!

THANK YOU SGT. PEARSON & OFFICER HARLEY

How awesome was it to meet best friends Tia and Alisha at Wise Women today?!  Sgt. Pearson had a lot of great information to share with us.  What was your favorite part?  If you didn't get a chance to ask a question or you thought of more questions, then please comment or e-mail me and we'll forward the question(s) to them.

I've given them the blog web-site, so they might log in and check out our posts.  A big thank you to them for spending time with us!

BTW, they gave you a huge compliment.  They said there was a positive student vibe in the room--better than in some schools they visit where girls can be really negative.  I think that means the class of 2015 (8th grade) and the class of 2016 (7th grade) are growing more wise!  Keep your world positive ladies!

WORTH MORE THAN AN AIRHEAD

Remember when Sgt. Pearson talked about how girls are worth more than a 25cent AirHead?  That was an awesome metaphor!  Don't let yourself be used by a guy and don't do things you don't really want to do just because you like him.  When she said, "Tell him to give you a call when we're grown up and you're a man", I nearly lost it.  She is sooo right!!!  We put a lot of energy into guys when we're young even though we should put time and effort into ourselves.

P.S.  A random fact for you:  AirHeads are made in Northern Kentucky (just 17 miles away from Norwood) at a company called Van Melle.  If you want to take a virtual tour of how they are made, then click here AirHead Factory.

WHORE

The dictionary says a whore is a prostitute.  Why do I hear girls randomly call each other whore and b***** in middle and high schools?

Do you think when women fought for the right to vote that they worked against each other by calling one another whore or did they work together for a common cause, in that case, to be able to vote like men could?  Check out the history of Women's Suffrage.

Young Women Who Fought for The Right To Vote
                                                    February 1913

It bothers me when I hear girls tear one another down.  I asked some girls why they think girls use the word whore.  They said jealousy.  I believe it.  Jealousy is normal, but what you do with painful emotions like that matters a lot.  Rather than hurt others, let's try to be happy for other people.  I know it's hard.  But try, try to be supportive.  Young women who walked the earth before you made history because they wanted a better life for all women.  What improvements will happen in the world if you support others rather than tear 'em down?  What impact will your generation of women have?
